I arrived at Nethergong this morning at 4.30am where I spent the next 5 hours walking around the circuit a few times in nice warm sunshine. It felt slightly more autumnal this morning with a slight chill early on but it soon warmed up. I managed to see or hear 52 species which is pretty good considering its July. Bird noted this morning were 3 Yellowhammer, 2 Little Owl, 2 Grey Heron, 3 Green Woodpecker, 3 Pheasant, 1 Sedge Warbler, 4 Common Whitethroat, 1 Kestrel, c10 Cormorant, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Cetti's Warbler, c20 Mallard, 1 Kingfisher and 3 Reed Warbler with one allowing a few brief shots before returning back into the reeds.

Reed Warbler

There were 2 Great spotted Woodpecker, 1 Hobby, 1 Treecreeper, 1 Jay, 1 Little Egret, 3 Reed Bunting, 7 Swallow, 1 Mistle Thrush, 6 Chiffchaff, 3 Blackcap, 2 Bullfinch, 1 Grasshopper Warbler reeling on and off still, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 2 House Martin, 1 Peregrine and 2 Common Buzzard. With the harvest taking place and fields being cut, there were c100 Herring and c30 Black headed Gulls loafing around, sadly no Mediterranean Gulls in my search. I'm hoping for a good autumn where hopefully, a few waders may pass over and maybe lots of fence and post checking will reveal a Whinchat or Wheatear.

  1. No Yellowhammer here for me this month Marc, sadly a bird that is diminishing rapidly on my patch. I did however get a Grasshopper Warbler! Just the second record ever!
