With some nice weather predicted for today, autumn almost upon us and the prospect of better birding to come, I was out of the house at 4.45am where a few minutes later I arrived at Nethergong. After parking up and getting ready, I spent 5 hours walking around the circuit a few times hoping to find a few returning migrants for the site. I managed to see or hear 50 species today which included a new bird for the year when I heard the call of a Golden Plover (103) flying over. I'm pretty sure I heard a distant one a few days ago so it was nice to add this species to the growing list. Other birds noted included 4 Green Woodpecker, 3 Reed Warbler, 11 Cormorant, 2 Mistle Thrush, 8 Little Egret flew north, 2 Bullfinch, 5 Mute Swan, 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Great spotted Woodpecker, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 2 Treecreeper, 7 Swallow, 5 House Martin and 1 Sand Martin. There were 3 Common Whitethroat, 1 Little Owl, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Jay, 1 Turtle Dove heard 'purring', 1 Kestrel, 2 Common Buzzard, 1 Blackcap and 1 Willow Warbler. I kept on checking the fence posts for a Wheatear or Whinchat but no sign yet but I still remain optimistic to at least get one of these species this year at Nethergong.

  1. Golden Plover :-) Nice. I might just get that on my year list, but they are less than annual visitors here.
