With some rare afternoon sunshine and light winds, I made a visit to Nethergong after work where I spent an hour looking from the gate on the eastern boundary which gives a good view over some fields. I was hoping that a few year ticks would be on offer and this proved to be the case. Birds noted were 1 Water Rail, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Mistle Thrush, 10 Pied Wagtail, Starling, 8 Meadow Pipit, 2 Marsh Harrier, 2 Stonechat and best of all, 1 ring tail Hen Harrier flew through and gave good views as it made its way to Grove Ferry, the first time I have seen this species on site. Other birds noted included c50 Fieldfare, 1 Kestrel, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 5 Mallard, 3 Goldcrest, 2 Great spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker and c20 Mute Swan. The year list moves on to 55 species which is pretty good for a small site. Still a few birds to hopefully catch up with including Sparrowhawk, Skylark, Lapwing, Linnet etc so i'm well on target.

  1. Good start Marc,
You have already got species i'm unlikely to see here this year, and a couple I have never seen here! maybe as well as highlight a new bird for the year you could put the year total in brackets after it, so we can follow your tally at glance :-)
