I arrived yesterday (Friday) at 05:20 where I spent a few hours walking around the site and fields noting 49 species. It was still, quite sunny and ended up being quite warm during the walk. Birds of note included 2 Marsh Harrier, 1 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestel, 2 Jay, 2 Raven early on before flying off towards Reculver, 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Chiffchaff, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 4 Blackcap, 4 Whitethroat, 1 Treecreeper, 3 Whinchat, 1 juvenile Stonechat and 1 Yellowhammer. After checking all the fence posts and fields once again without luck, I was thinking it wasn't going to be my day when I noticed a bird flying through the area at about 40ft in height. I quickly got on to it and was amazed to see it was a Wheatear (123). The white rump showing off well in flight as it passed through the area. I was hoping it was going to stop but it continued on through and was soon lost to view. Only a quick sighting but well worth the effort and nice to eventually see a Wheatear in the area.
I made a visit this morning where I managed to see 51 species in sunny conditions but eventually there were a few heavy showers. Birds seen included 9 Grey Partridge seen in flight flying into a sweetcorn field. Also seen were 1 Golden Plover, 3 Whimbrel, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Kestrel, 1 Peregrine, 2 Jay, 2 Raven, 7 Reed Warbler, 3 Willow Warbler, 4 Cetti's Warbler, 3 Blackcap, 5 Whitethroat, 4 Whinchat, 1 juvenile Stonechat, 1 Bullfinch, 4 Yellowhammer and 15 Reed Bunting.
Utterly wonderful shots of the Whinchat, Marc. I've been mainly concentrating on the dragons lately, but I have noticed a distinct lack of birds in the areas that I am visiting. Found a new site 5 minutes from home for Willow Emerald a couple of days ago, and yesterday reconfirmed Willows at a site even closer to home where I found one last year. I hope tthe bird situation picks up in the autumn, when the dragons have gone. Best wishes, stay safe - - - - Richard
