After dropping Michelle off at work, I called into Nethergong on my way back home for a few hours where in frequent snow showers and a biting easterly wind, I managed to see a good range of species. In these conditions birds are often on the move and this proved the case this morning with a Redshank (61) heard not long after arriving. Other birds noted included 10 Common Gull (62), 5 Yellowhammer, 2 Snipe, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Pied Wagtail, c270 Lapwing (63) flew west in small groups and one of these flocks had 1 Golden Plover (64) with them. There were 24 Bar tailed Godwit (65) which were a new species for the site which were watched flying east and 1 adult White fronted Goose (66) flew over a few times calling. Other birds noted were c50 Redwing, c50 Fieldfare, 2 Kestrel, 1 Marsh Harrier, 7 Teal, 3 Coot, 1 Reed Bunting, c10 Meadow Pipit, 3 Skylark, 1 Bullfinch. With this cold weather set in for a few more days, I'm hopeful of a few more visits to see whether any other species are on the move. As ever the snow provided a few pleasing photos with the phone this morning.

  1. My goodness, it looks cold there, Marc. However, from what we've been hearing I was expecting that you'd have had deeper snow. Another great tally of birds there, though. Take great care - - - Richard

    1. It certainly felt cold. I'm thankful there wasnt so much snow that I couldn't visit but enough to get the birds on the move. Fingers crossed for more to come.

    1. Plenty of birds on offer if you can put up with the freezing temperatures. Back for more soon.
