I spent a few hours having a walk around Nethergong this morning in misty windless conditions where I noted 47 species. It was pleasing to see a few species singing and Woodpeckers drumming, a reminder that Spring is on the way. Birds noted included 1 Woodcock, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Green Woodpecker, 7 Yellowhammer, 5 Jay, 8 Redwing, 2 Common Buzzard, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Kestrel and 2 Marsh Harrier. There were 6 Stock Dove, 2 Cetti's Warbler, c220 Fieldfare, 20 Mute Swan, 1 Bullfinch, 3 Reed Bunting, 2 Great spotted Woodpecker, 334 Cormorant, 3 Mistle Thrush (59) and 1 Greenfinch (60). A night recording on the 5th produced Tawny Owl, Barn Owl, Grey Heron, Teal, Mallard, Redwing and a few other species. With the temperatures dropping over the next few days and snow forecast, I'm hopeful of a visit in the next few days to see whether there may be any birds moving through the area.
That's a pretty impressive tally, Marc. With the Odonates in the summer too, perhaps you should take up permanent residence here! Stay safe - - - Richard
ReplyDeleteThank you Richard. Considering the site is only 700m in length and c200m wide, there is so much wildlife to be seen. I do walk the fields on some boundaries to make it a little bigger but it has an impressive list already. Take care.
