I arrived at a very cold Nethergong this morning at 6am where I sat in the car making the most of the warmth before getting ready about 06:30. I spent a few hours walking around in beautiful sunny and windless conditions where I noted 53 species. Birds seen included 1 Barn Owl, 1 Little Owl, 15 Pheasant, 2 Green Woodpecker, 3 Water Rail, c90 Cormorant, c30 Fieldfare, 5 Mistle Thrush, 1 Great spotted Woodpecker, 1 Kingfisher, c70 Redwing, 10 Linnet and 2 Kestrel. There were 4 Stock Dove, 1 Grey Heron, 3 Great White Egret still out on the marsh, 5 Reed Bunting, 1 Coot, 1 Snipe, 1 Bullfinch, 5 Long tailed Tit, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Jay, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Chiffchaff, 4 Skylark, 4 Marsh Harrier up in the air together including a displaying male and 3 Common Buzzard. Recording during the night produced plenty of Redwing calls, Moorhen, Coot, Barn Owl, Little Owl and best of all, a Little Grebe (81).

  2. Who can resist a Wren? - certainly not me! delightful shots, Marc.

Seeing your sighting notes, I've come to the conclusion that the area round me is greatly impoverished for birds. It used to be much better. I must have spent around 10 hours this week walking country lanes and woodland rides and seeing very little indeed, with the most exciting being a few sightings of Goosander. Five years ago, those same travels would have produced a few Little Owls, Marsh Tit, Grey Partridge, Great Spotted and Green Woodpecker and much much more - so much has disappeared!

    Stay safe - - Richard

    1. Many thanks Richard. A sign of the times unfortunately. I wouldn't mind a Goosander though. Take care.
